4 Things to do in Kotor

Located in the heart of the Kotor bay, Kotor it’s a coastal town in Montenegro. One of the most beautiful places I’ve been too. Seriously I feel in love with this place.

So, that’s why I’m going to show you the best places to visit in Kotor and around.

1. Old Town

Stari grad (local language) is the most famous part of Kotor. The Old town was built like a maze for protective purposes between 12th and 14th century. It’s surrounded by ancient walls which stretch for 4.5 km directly above the city and they reach up to 20 meters in parts. It is home to numerous sights like churches, cathedrals, museums, squares. Nowadays The Stari grad of Kotor is considered as the best preserved medieval old towns in the Adriatic and it is listed as UNESCO World heritage sites.

2.Climb up the upper Town Walls

Personally my favorite! After you take a walk in the Old Town (or before that) head to the San Giovanni fortress. It is located on the top of the mountain dominating the eastern bay. To go there you have to climb 1 350 stairs from sea level to a height of 1 200+ meters (4 000 feet). The views from there are absolutely breathtaking. I didn’t want to go back down. On the half way up is the Church of Our Lady of Health.

Going to climb the upper Town Walls consider these things:
-On some sections, the steps are broken so beware.
-Choose your shoes wisely. Hiking shoes would be the best choice, sneakers would also work. No flip flops.
-Take between two and tree hours. Don’t rush, enjoy the views.
-Don’t forget to take a bottle of water.

The entrance fee is 3 euros.

3.Perast

Perast is a place near Kotor. The most beautiful buildings there was build in the 17th and 18th centuries. It’s a peaceful and quiet place who capture you with is pure¬†beauty. Perast is very small and you can walk from one to the other side of it in 10 minutes. Explore the narrow streets and alleyways that stretch back from the water. There are many souvenirs shops with a lot of beautiful arts.
Perast is under the protection of UNESCO.

4.Our Lady of the Rock
The church Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock) is one of the most popular attractions of Montenegro. It is located on the same-named island just in front of Perast. The church was build in 1630 on an artificial island which was built by fisherman from Perast.
You can go there by taking a boat from Perast. The rides cost 3-5 euros.
